Accomodations

With an expansive view across Wentzell Lake, Sunshine is perfect for group retreats of up to 10 participants. In the main part of the house, there are 5 bedrooms, a kitchen, dining room, sitting room, a 4-piece bath, and a great veranda. The attached annex, which has just been renovated, includes a meeting room, sitting room, tea kitchen, and meditation hall (can be used for large meetings). As an alternative to the indoor plumbing, there is a superb 2-chamber composting outhouse with a great view, which is highly recommended.

Blue Dragon is a sunny cottage between the gardens and the lake. It has experienced many long meditation retreats. This one-room cabin is suitable for a solitary retreatant or a couple. Lighting is by solar generated electricity; water is carried in from the farm house; a cooler is there for food that needs to stay cold; a wood stove provides plenty of heat in the winter; a 2-burner propane stove is for cooking; there is an outhouse near-by; for bathing you will have the sauna, the lake, and a shower in the “chatroom” at the farm house.

Happy Jack was the first “woods camp” and has housed students and interns since 1994. It has two small bedrooms and a loft, wood heat stove, solar lights, 4-burner propane stove with oven for cooking, a well to draw water from, and a beautiful 2-chamber composting outhouse to walk to. This is real rustic living --- but comfortable.

The PowerHouse is so named because it is on the grid with all the customary amenities, even electricity and running hot and cold water. It is also right on the lake with incredible views of sky and water dragons. It has 3 bedrooms, 4-piece bath, and living/dining room and a 20th Century kitchen. Heat is from a super wood stove with electric back-up, which isn’t necessary unless you don’t like to put wood in the stove a couple times each day.

Sweetwater cabin is on Sweetwater Brook below the kami shrine. It is a very small and perfectly appointed space for a solitary meditation or writing retreat. Just look out the windows or walk out into the forest unnoticed by any other human being. Lighting is by the sun or by candle; water is from the brook or carried in from the farm house; a cooler is there for food that needs to stay cold; a small wood stove provides plenty of heat in the winter; a 2-burner propane stove is for cooking; there is an outhouse near-by; for bathing you will have the sauna and a shower in the “chatroom” at the farm house.

Tamarack is a forest cabin where you can haul water, chop wood & walk to the outhouse. It contains 4 bedrooms, a sitting room and kitchen. a cooler is there for food that needs to stay cold; a small wood stove provides plenty of heat in the winter; a 4-burner propane stove with oven is for cooking; there is an outhouse near-by; for bathing you will have the sauna and a shower in the “chatroom” at the farm house.

White Lion is close to ideal for solitary meditation retreats. This 3-room cabin rests just above the lake where it flows out into the LaHave River. Warning: the location can be distracting because it is right next to a refuge and haven for ducks, eagles, herons, and other wild life. Just outside the door begins a trail to walk down the river and through the forest. All the running water (and the outhouse) is outside the cabin and electricity is generated from photovoltaic panels nearby. Heat is from an Austrian style kachelofen (a standard in Europe, a marvel in N.A.). For bathing you will have the sauna, the lake, and a shower in the “chatroom” at the farm house.

Will’s cabin on Pine Hill is in an isolated place and makes a delightful short-term home for a single retreatant or a couple. The kitchen/dining room is on the main floor and the loft has a double bed. Lighting is by the sun, gas light or candle; water is from the well down the hill or carried in from the farm house; a cooler is there for food that needs to stay cold; a small wood stove provides plenty of heat in the winter; a 2-burner propane stove is for cooking; there is an outhouse near-by; for bathing you will have the sauna and a shower in the “chatroom” at the farm house.
